Things to do in Newport, RI: year-round
Newport is a walker’s delight. The main drag is beautiful and includes Bowen’s Wharf and Bannister’s Wharf (filled with boutiques, galleries, and waterfront dining), but don’t neglect “lower Thames St.” Just past the wharfs…keep going… Hammett’s Hotel will be on your right, and The Red Parrot Restaurant will be on your left. Walk between them and that is the beginning of lower Thames St, which includes amazing one-of-a-kind shopping.

Dine on Broadway: Tourists flock to Thames Street for food, and while there are some great eats in that area, you’ll get some equally delicious deals on Broadway.
Over the past decade, local restaurants and business owners have transformed Broadway into a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood worth visiting.
It’s hard to go wrong with any of the restaurants on Broadway, but the most notable ones we’d recommend are: Malt, a family-run contemporary pub serving locally sourced food and featuring 31 draft beers, as well as Corner Cafe, one of Newport's most popular breakfast spots, voted the island's #1 BYOB restaurant. Fun tip that most visitors don't know: they also serve some of the best pizza on the island, featuring a delicious wood-grilled crust, Thursday through Saturday.

22 Bowen's: If you’re in the mood to get dressed up and treat yourself, 22 Bowen’s is the place to be. This upscale waterfront restaurant is renowned for its expertly prepared steaks, fresh seafood, and sophisticated atmosphere. During the summer months, don’t miss 22 Portside, their outdoor bar, where you can enjoy handcrafted cocktails while taking in harbor views.

Mother Pizzeria: For a cozy night out, head to Mother Pizzeria for their delicious wood-fired pizzas and a must-try espresso martini made with house-made Baileys.
- Drift Cafe: For a more casual feel, Drift Cafe is the perfect spot to grab something to go or relax in one of their signature swing chairs. Located just down the street from our headquarters, it's a great choice if you're in the mood for a coffee, smoothie, breakfast sandwich, or breakfast bowl. If you're stopping by for lunch, one of our personal favorites is the Caprese Bowl, available exclusively on their summer menu.
- Diegos: Last, but certainly not least, is Diego's. If you're craving Mexican food, Diego's is known for its delicious tacos, burritos, and flavorful margaritas. There’s no dress code here; you can dress up and enjoy margaritas with friends or pop in after a long day of exploring. With its edgy atmosphere and creative menu, Diego’s is a fun and casual spot for any occasion.

Stroll to King Park: You’ve probably heard of the Cliff Walk — and sure, it is epic — but if you’d rather chill by the water, King Park has got it going on. The park is right off lower Thames Street on Wellington Avenue and features a beautiful gazebo, covered and uncovered areas for sitting or eating, an up-close view of the harbor, and access to a small beach.

Enjoy a cocktail at Vanderbilt Grace: This hidden gem offers panoramic views of Newport's waterfront stretching from King Park to the Pell Bridge. Head to the Vanderbilt Grace roof deck for a sunset cocktail, and be sure to ask one of the hotel’s friendly employees about the building’s fascinating history!
See Newport from the water: Rhode Island is the Ocean State, and Newport, RI, is the unofficial sailing capital of the world. If you don’t get out on the water at least once, you’ll really be missing out. Newport isn't just a summer playground. When the crowd thins out and the air turns crisp, the City by the Sea shows off a whole new side of its charm.
In the fall, grab a sweater and head to the Cliff Walk for ocean views framed by fiery foliage, or hop on a harbor cruise to see the coastline dressed in autumn colors.
Farms around town roll out pumpkin patches and corn mazes, and if you're up for something different, you can even take a rail bike tour along the bay. Local festivals keep the calendar full, from seafood feasts on Bowen's Wharf to harvest celebrations at Newport Vineyards.
Winter brings its own magic. The iconic Newport Mansions sparkle with holiday decor, while seal-watching cruises take you out into Narragansett Bay to spot these seasonal visitors.
